Bob Marley was born on 6 February 1945 in a small village in Jamaica . His father Norval Marley was a white British Naval Officier . Despite his marriage, he was an occasional visitor. He didn’t live to see the success of his son Bob.
The original Wailers were formed by Bob Marley , Bunny Langstone and Peter Tosh 38 years ago . “Summer Down” is a song which was an instant number one in Jamaica. Three years later, Haile Sellasie visited Jamaica and all the Wailers began to grow their “locks” .
The Wailers enjoyed international reconition in 1973 . Some time later, Bunny left the Wailers and he was followed by Peter Tosh for his solo career. Bob retained two musicians, a bass player and a drummer, and added a trio of women, one of whom was his wife Rita . The first album was a major success.
He came back and stayed in Jamaica for 5 years and this influence was noted by politicians . On the evening of 3rd December some gunmen arrived at Bob’s house and shot Bob, his wife and his manager . They behaved this way for political reasons but fortunately nobody was killed .
The following year, Bob cancelled the last dates of a big European tour because he had a cancer in the big toe of his right foot . It was the result of a neglected football injury because Bob was very keen on football .
Bob received the United Nations Peace Medal in New York when he introduced reggae music into the world (Japan, Australia and New-Zeland) . A year later, Bob collapsed while jogging in Central Park . His cancer had returned and was present in his lungs and brain .
Despite this, he flew to Pittsburg where he gave his last concert on 23rd September 1980 . At the beginning of May, Bob wanted to finish his life in Jamaica but was ill and stayed in a hospital of Miami . There he died on 11 May 1981 .
Since then, his body has been transfered to Jamaica. There, it was placed in specially built mausoleum at his birthplace, Nine miles.
