All members of Five In Ten played in a lot of different bands in the past. But they started as a regular band in November of 1992. Their name comes from the UB 40 song: “One In Ten”.
After a few months of rehearsals, they decided to make a demo tape to help them to find gigs. One week before recording this demo tape, Boni a french keyboard player joined them. When this demo tape arrived to Marcus from Nightmare Records, he was very impressed and decided to make it on vinyl. It was a big surprise for FIVE IN TEN because they were only a band of friends without any musical claims. This debut single was completely made by themselves on a portable 4 tracks recorder and even if the sound was a bit softy, they were very proud of it. At this tage of their evolution, they were clearly linked with the ska/pop sound of bands like Hot Knives. But they were not a typical ska band. Ska was just one of the different styles which influence them. Their other influences were punk (Clash, Members, Jam...) and pop (Housemartins, early Farm....). Future will show that these influences will take more and more importance in their music.
At the end of 1994, after this debut single “Mary/ Everyday Train” and gigs in Belgium and Germany, Boni left the band because he was living 200km from Ličge and it was a big problem for rehearsals. They decided to replace him by Marc, a saxophonist from Aachen in Germany. Sadly
1995 was a bad year for FIVE IN TEN. Fabian, the drummer, was involved in a hard scooter crash on the way back from a rally in Holland. He stopped playing drums during a few months. After this sad period, they started again and spent a lot of time writing new songs and introducing the new saxophonist in the band. Step by step their sound became more aggressive without leaving this melodic touch which is the trademark of FIVE IN TEN.
In the spring of 1996, the band came back on stage All year long, they went on gigging in Belgium, France and Germany. 1996 also saw them going for the first time in a proper studio to record a few tracks for a forthcoming single. These new recordings showed their slow evolution from a ska/pop sound to a more personal white- reggae/punk/pop mix.
Two songs from this session saw the lights of day in the form of a new single on Mad Butcher Rec. :“Open Door/Ten Years”. It was out in April 1997 and to promote this new single, they went on a seven dates German tour supporting the English band: Ferrymen. They really enjoyed it and for them it was a real success.
In 1998, they played a few gigs in Belgium but they passed most of their times rehearsing and writing a complete new set. This hard working period gave very good result and their last gigs really impressed the audience. Michael from Mad Butcher Rec. had always believed in the band and he gave them the chance to record a 8 tracks C.D. This C.D. shows the strong personality of FIVE IN TEN and gives a good example of their characteristic sound. Now they can say that they had integrated all their different tastes and influences to give birth to an unique style. The FIVE IN TEN style !!
